The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has assured staff of his ministry that he would do everything within his power to motivate them and amiliorate the challenges facing them. To this end, workers in the Ministry are henceforth to enjoy free bus rides to and from work. Some of the tools such as laptops that they require for work are to be added the Ministry’s budget. Addressing workers at a retreat organised for them, the Minister assured that the ministry would acquire new buses, take care of fueling and servicing of the vehicles, and ensure that they do not pay for using them. “Knowing the background I come from”, Amaechi explained, “I felt that you people are spending more money having to transport yourselves to work and I’m surprised that they are collecting money from you for those buses.” On staff training, Amaechi assured, “We would devise a means of training and retraining our staff, be it locally or internationally; and it will be according to our resources,” He spoke of the need to establish a clinic that would handle workers health and asked the Permanent Secretary to liaise with the NYSC to post young doctors to the Ministry. “Let us get the NYSC to post to the ministry at least two doctors, so we can ascertain the cost of establishing a clinic for our staff. This will enable those who fall ill to get free treatment”, the Minister further stated. Also speaking, the Minister of State, Gbemishola Sarah said she would work closely with her senior colleague to ensure workers and guarantee that the ministry delivers on the promises of the Buhari administration. In her words, “Whatever the Minister (Amaechi) had been doing I will follow suit, I will always be behind him and I will do my best to always ensure that we do what will promote staff welfare.” Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Sabiu Zakari said the retreat was planned to promote understanding between management and staff, and urged them to work at tandem with laid down guidelines to realise the mission of the Buhari administration. As he put it, “the purpose of this interactive session is to have a better understanding with the Ministers. It is an opportunity for us to air our views and understand what they (Ministers) want us to do in this second term of Mr. President. It is our hope that as we gave our support to the Hon. Minister of Transportation during the first tenure, we’ll give even more this second term.”
