Senator Ovie Omo Agege, Deputy Senate President has been unveiled by a group of party men as the leader of the South – South Caucus of the All Progressives Congress.
The purported election of the leader claimed by a section of the leadership in the zone took place at a meeting boycotted by prominent players which was called outside the geopolitical zone to address matters pertaining to the welfare of the party and the political future of the zone.
Until the purported election of Omo Agege, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transportation and two-time Director General of the Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organization was regarded across the region as the leader of the party in the zone.
Incidentally, Amaechi was not at the Abuja meeting chaired by the National Vice Chairman of the party in the South South, Hillard Eta where the decision to elect a leader was reached.
Also absent at the said meeting were Senator Godswill Akpabio, Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State and other major stakeholders in the party from the zone.
There are increasing signs that the widening gulf among political gladiators which is shaking the foundation of the APC nationwide as the Buhari years gradually winds up, and groups within the party struggle to seize control of the machinery of power, has spilt over to the South-South Zone.
An APC leader who spoke under conditions of anonymity declared, “What we have in the South South is a declaration of war. You may think that 2023 is far away, but the fight to determine the future that is associated with it has begun.”
“It is getting increasingly fierce and rough; alignments are being built and destroyed; and people are pushing for more and more advantage”, the well placed party man said, “soon there will be no hiding place even for those on the fence.”
Adams Oshiomhole, National Chairman of the party has been under remarkable pressure of late, with the entire party structure in his home state, Edo, declaring him persona non grata and governors of the party expressing serious dissatisfaction with his style of leadership.
But, the embattled chairman got a breather from the Abuja meeting which decided to pass a vote of confidence on his leadership and also resolved to intensify peacemaking efforts in Edo where Governor Obaseki is at war with Oshiomhole.
There has been no reaction from critical players who did not attend the meeting which held at the Federal Capital Territory, but political observers posit that the last of the infighting within the South South zone which may lead to the APC’s disintegration has not been heard.
