It is now certain that the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State would scrap all existing structures in order to pave way for fresh congresses. Although the Leader of the party, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi had hinted at that possibility at a brief ceremony organised to honour him in Abuja, shortly after he was sworn in, we have learnt through impeccable sources that congresses from the ward to State levels are likely to hold in September. A meeting attended by leaders of the party which purportedly took place in Lagos Saturday morning allegedly set timelines for the exercise. It is not clear if the old teams which held sway at the local and State levels would return to office. But there are strong indications that the system may allow room for contests among aspiring candidates as part of efforts to ensure the emergence of popular leadership at all levels. Recall that serious infighting which led to the existence of parallel excos had denied the APC of the right to field candidates, following legal interventions sought by a group loyal to Senator Magnus Abe. It would mean that in order to keep its house in order in Rivers State, the APC may have decided to set up new structures. Against this backdrop, the stage is now set for members to decide which of the factions within the party is actually on ground.
