The All Progressives Congress in Bayelsa State is to embark on a series of congresses leading to the election of delegates who would elect the gubernatorial candidate of the party. The process will begin next week with ward congresses, according to information reaching our news desk. Primaries in that oil rich State would be conducted by indirect primaries, following a broad consensus reached by stakeholders in the party. From all indications, the struggle for delegates who would come to Yenagoa to elect the gubernatorial candidate would be between Senator Heineken Lokpobori and David Lyon. This is however not to ignore the presence of Preye Aganaba who is also in the race. Timipre Sylva, Minister of State in charge of Petroleum who is apparently the Leader of the party in the State is leaning heavily in the direction of David Lyon, a resourceful aspirant who is believed to have far reaching contacts amongst Bayelsa’s “strongmen”. Sylva billed for honour by his kinsmen left Nembe at noon Saturday to Okpoma, his hometown. But sources close to the political tactician suggest he has already swept into action to ensure that his preferred candidate scales the hurdle. Opponents of the Minister working for the Lokpobiri camp acknowledge that his appointment to the Petroleum Ministry poses a huge threat. But a source told this publication, “We will not be intimidated by Sylva. We know he is planning to use militants, especially now that he has control of the oil pipeline contracts.” ” Notwithstanding, we will give him a good fight. We believe we have a more capable candidate in Lokpobiri. He is more seasoned and we think that’s what Bayelsa people need now”, the source added.
